Australia & South Pacific
Also often referred to as Oceania, this region of the world covers places such as Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea as well as the archipelagos of Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia. Australia is the largest country on the continent and features many popular city destinations, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Perth and Adelaide. Other popular Australian destinations include the Outback, the Blue Mountains, the Gold Coast and the Great Barrier Reef.
New Zealand has been a well-developed tourism destination for some time. The North Island is home to such cities as Auckland and Wellington and boasts a wide variety of scenery while the South Island is characterized by majestic mountains (the Southern Alps), glaciers, fjords and stunning beaches. It is home to such cities as Christchurch, Nelson and Queenstown. New Zealand also has several offshore islands, many of which are rather remote and uninhabited.
Papua New Guinea is known for its tropical rainforests and its many different indigenous cultural groups. Polynesia evokes images of island paradises surrounded by turquoise waters. The main island nations in Polynesia include American Samoa, the Cook Islands, Kiribati and French Polynesia. Melanesia’s culture is similar to Papua New Guinea and Fiji is the most important destination in this archipelago. Micronesia is less well known; its most popular destination is Palau, an island country with a population of 21,000 people.
