Brantford 2009

Always on the lookout for easy getaway destinations from my home base Toronto, I figured that Brantford, barely 100 km west of Toronto, would make for a great three-day excursion. Our first day started with a visit to the fabulous Glenhyrst Art Gallery, housed in a historic mansion, and a great performance of “Driving Miss Daisy” at the Sanderson Centre, a historic theatre opened in 1919. The next day, after a tour of my boutique hotel, the Bodega Inn, I visited the Bell Homestead, the historic home of Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone. The Mohawk Chapel was the next significant historic site we visited. We also had a chance to chat with the merchants at the Brantford Farmers Market before our local guide Melissa took us on a bike ride followed by a lunch in a historic train station. Then we got to see pewter art being crafted at Robert Hall Originals and enjoyed a fabulous dinner at La Cantinella in St. George. Our B&B hosts at the Two Roses B&B provided warm personalized hospitality to us and got us ready with a nice breakfast for our third day. We went on a slow boat ride on the Grand River with local expert Jamie Kent who knew everything about local history, fauna, flora and architecture. Brantford had turned out to be a really great three-day getaway, with great culture, culinary experiences and outdoor adventures.
