Being based out of Toronto, I always look for great getaway destinations that are close to the city. One of my favourite areas for weekend escapes is the Peterborough and Kawarthas Region which is barely 90 minutes from Toronto. Peterborough itself has about 75,000 residents, it’s a university town and has a great selection of restaurants, bars and eateries downtown. During four nice summer days in August of 2010 I had a chance to explore so many things that Peterborough has to offer: from a sightseeing cruise past the Peterborough Lift Lock, to biking and kayaking in the city, to very informative visits to the Lang Pioneer Village and the Canadian Canoe Museum. I got to see an awesome free concert as part of the Festival of Lights and a great outdoor theatre experience at the 4th line Theatre, which made for an extremely diverse program. Naturally, culinary experiences that focus on local Ontario produce did not miss either: I enjoyed some awesome meals at the Riverside Grill and Gazebo Bar, and at the Elmhirst’s Resort. B&B owners Cora Whittington from the Golden Pathways B&B and Sheila and Jeff Roberts from the Beacon by the Bay B&B made me feel extremely welcome during this fabulous summer getaway.
