Rome, Frascati, Orvieto 2010
Rome is a dream destination for so many of us. Well, it took me a long time to get there, but in June of 2010 I finally made it to the Eternal City. After an enjoyable overnight train ride from Vienna, I finally arrived at the Roma Termini Train Station to begin my four-day adventure. On my first day I hopped on a sightseeing bus to get a lay of the land and familiarize myself with the city. This helped me on the second day where I visited all of Rome’s top tourist attractions on foot. From the Colosseum, to the Forum Romanum, the Vatican, the Castel Sant’Angelo, the Piazza Navona, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and the Spanish Steps, Rome’s historic sights are too numerous to mention and absolutely breathtaking. In two guided bicycle tours, I explored the Ancient Via Appia and the panoramic sights of Rome, which included a visit to St. Peter’s Basilica. Rome almost overwhelmed me with the sheer number of its historic sites and monuments. I also took two train trips out of town: one into the wine-producing hillside town of Frascati and another one to the medieval hilltop town of Orvieto in Umbria, which is located majestically on an ancient volcanic hill.
