Spain has been one of my favourite travel destinations for a long time, I love the Spanish language and I am enthralled by Spanish history, architecture, its interesting traditions and beautiful landscapes. With my friend Theresa I embarked on a two-week trip to Spain in September of 2004 that started with two days in Barcelona, Spain’s vibrant, second-largest city. This gave me a chance to admire Gaudi’s masterpieces (the Sagrada Familia cathedral, La Pedrera, Guell Park and many more. A visit to the Poble Espanyol provided me with an overview of Spanish architecture from different regions. Mount Tibidabo with its stunning cathedral and its vintage funicular was also a really worthwhile visit. Then we made it to the historic city of Tarragona, settled since Roman times, and then further down the coast to Valencia. From here we travelled further south to the Costa Blanca and the scenic towns of Peñiscola and Javea. Circling back north we stopped in the resort town of Sitges and headed inland via the medieval town of Montblanc to explore the Mountains of Montserrat.
After a quick flight we landed in Ibiza where we explored virtually every beach on the island for the next week. Naturally we walked extensively through the old parts of Eivissa (or Ibiza), the capital of the island and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. We particularly enjoyed the towns of Portinatx and Santa Eularia des Riu. In our adventurous spirit we took the ferry across to the island of Formentera where we rented motorscooters to explore the entire island. To learn more about local traditions we also enjoyed a folkloric performance in Sant Miquel.
